Lucy Walker
In New York, Walker took up DJing and formed a part of the mid-nineties 'illbient' electronica scene. Walker directed two episodes of the Nickelodeon children's TV programme Blue's Clues that were nominated for Daytime Emmy awards in 2001 and 2002. Her first feature length documentary Devil's Playground - Amish Teenagers in the Modern World, looked at Amish teenagers during the season of 'rumspringa'. The cloistered youngsters encounter the modern world with all it's temptations and must decide if they want to remain a part of the community. The film won a Special Mention - Best Documentary at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2002, the Audience Award at the 2002 Saratoga Film Festival as well as being nominated for an Emmy in the News & Documentary Emmy Awards category and an Independent Spirit Award, both in 2003. The inspiring Blindsight follows a group of six blind Tibetan teenagers as they attempt to climb a Himalayan mountain with the blind American mountaineer Erik Weihenmayer. The young Tibetans, who suffer abuse for their disability from their countrymen, climb mountains both physical and personal in this emotionally charged film. The movie won the Audience Award at AFI Fest 2006 and the Palm Springs International Film Festival 2007, it was also nominated for the Audience Award for Best Film at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival.
