Steven Speilberg
He started out as a tv director but got his break after making the film 'Duel' starring Dennis Weaver about a truck driver with road rage, hell bent on terrorising a passing motorist. Mr. Speilberg (along with George Lucas) was probably responsible for bringing cinema back in fashion after a decline in audiences due to the onset of the video industry, starting with the blockbuster 'Jaws' in the 70's, followed by 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'. These commercial successes spawned other blockbusters such as 'Superman: The Movie' (Donner)and of course 'Star Wars'.(Lucas) It was cinema's return. Audiences filled theatres again for the thrill of the big screen and rollercoaster action from the likes of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and the heartwarming 'E.T. The Extraterrestial'. Speilberg was riding high despite failures like '1941' inspired by the vintage 'Hellzapoppin'. Films such as 'The Colour Purple' and 'Schindler's List also quietened the critics, proving that Spielberg could also direct more serious drama. Steven Speilberg - filmography
