Colin Firth
With films on his CV such as The Accidental Husband (2008), St Trinian's (2007), Bridget Jone's Diary (2001) and What a Girl Wants (2003), one could be forgiven for dismissing Colin Firth and ticking the box Marked stuffed shirt Englishman. It is only when you delve deeper into his body of work that you realise the 50 year old actor is so much more than a stereotype.
Born into an academic family in Greyshott, Hampshire in 1960, Colin has risen through the ranks of British film and Hollywood successes. From the beautifully written and acted Another Country (1984), the psychologically twisted Trauma (2004) and Apartment Zero (1998), to the chilling TV drama Conspiracy (2001), Colin continues to delight his fans and fellow cinema goers with his often subtle and emotive acting portrayal of complex and often damaged characters.
In 2010's A Single Man Colin took on one of his toughest roles to date, that of a grieving homosexual college professor, living out his final day on Earth with all the intensity that the knowledge of finiteness can bestow. This was to be a performance that bagged Firth a BAFTA for best actor and a nod for the Academy award.
With the approaching release of films Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Gambit, longtime Firthies and new devotees will be pleased to see Colin Firth gracing the big screen once more. We're sure this won't be the last we see of him either. While he did not claim his statuette in 2010 Firth did get to collect his Oscar a year later for what can be arguably called his finest role to date - as King George VI in this years runaway success - The King's Speech.
Already a national treasure we can't wait to see what the future holds for this gem of a man.
