Robert Mitchum

born 6 august, 1917 in bridgeport, connecticut; died 1 july, 1997 in montecito, california, of lung cancer and emphysema-related complications.

first achieved fame as a child poet in his native new england. he was a teenage hobo during the great depression and served time on a georgia chaingang for vagrancy.

began his hollywood career in the hopalong cassidy 'horse operas' before graduating to full features and howard hughes' rko studio. was infamously arrested for possession and use of illegal narcotics in 1948, although this was later expunged from his record and he was cleared of all charges.

although he had a reputation as a fighter, womaniser, drug-taker and drunkard, mitchum was highly regarded in hollywood, not least for his high level of professionalism on set, and for his willingness to stand up for his supporting cast and crew.

he appeared in approximately 120 movies, notably 'Out Of The Past' (1947), 'The Night Of The Hunter' (1955), 'heaven knows, mr allison' (1957), 'Thunder Road' (1958), 'The Sundowners' (1960), both versions of 'Cape Fear' (1962 and 1991), 'ryan's daughter' (1970), 'the friends of eddie coyle' (1973), and the tv miniseries 'north and south' (1985) and 'war and rememberance' (1988-89).

he never won an oscar but was nominated as best supporting actor in 1945 for his role in 'the story of g i joe'. shortly after his death, fellow actor Jack Nicholson dedicated his oscar to mitchum.
