Robert De Niro
Robert Mario De Niro Jr – born 17 August, 1943, in New York – long-time collaborator of Martin Scorsese, does a fine line in powerful crime figures (which he’s successfully leveraged into comedic roles), and is widely hailed as the greatest actor of his generation.
Al Pacino may have something to say about that, of course, with whom De Niro finally shared an electric on-screen pairing in Heat, two decades after his career was forged in the white-hot roles of Mean Streets, his first Oscar win for The Godfather Part 2, and Taxi Driver.
Training at several stage schools, and teenage years spent mostly Off-Broadway and in t Heatre workshops, formed De Niro's intense 'method' dedication to his craft. A dedication that extends to dramatic physical transformation: gaining 27 kg as aging boxer Jake La Motta in Raging Bull (for which he won his second Oscar), grinding his teeth for Cape Fear, shaving his hairline to play Al Capone in The Untouchables.
Investing in his beloved TriBeCa neighbourhood of lower Manhattan, De Niro has established a film festival, restaurants and his own film company, TriBeCa Productions (since 1989). He made his directorial debut with A Bronx Tale in 1993, and the decade to date has seen a swing to more comedic roles, and his second and third helms: The Score and, most recently, The Good Shepherd.
Wise words: "One of the things about acting is it allows you to live other people's lives without having to pay the price."
