Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren
Born 26 July 1945, in Ilford, Essex – Ilyena Vasilievna Mironov (dad is of Russian origin) is now more commonly known (but not, you know, commonly) as Blighty’s second-most famous acting Dame, Helen Mirren.

But at least she's played Her Majesty more often than Dame Judi – in The Madness Of King George as Queen Charlotte, wife of George III; Elizabeth I in the TV series of the same name; and a BAFTA-winner as our current monarch in The Queen.

By her early 20s, Mirren was a star of the Old Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company, which meant much Bard work, on both stage and screen. And while enjoying a variety of film and telly work, she's perhaps best known as detective Jane Tennyson in the highly-rated Prime Suspect crime drama series.

Wise Words: "In England, becoming a Dame is a big deal. I do feel it's a great honour. But I had to think about it quite seriously for a couple of weeks. It does sort of squash you into the establishment thing. In the end, my baser feelings got the better of me. I succumbed to Pride."
