Clark Gable

Clark Gable
Born in 1901 Clark Gable was nicknamed "The King of Hollywood" and appeared in 67 motion pictures, the most well known being "Gone with the Wind" starring opposite Vivien Leigh.

Although Gable was contacted to MGM during WW2 he signed up to join the airforce after the death of his third wife Carole Lombard in an aeroplane crash. He saw active duty out of RAF Polebrook in the UK where he earned an Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross for the five combat missions he was involved in. After his aircraft was attacked during one of the missions and Gable nearly killed by flak MGM pressured the US Army Air Corps to return him, and he eventually requested a discharge and was granted one, leaving with the rank of Major.

Over his extensive career Gable was Nominated for 3 Oscars - "Gone with the Wind", "Mutiny On The Bounty" and "It Happened One Night" - The latter being the only one he won. His Oscar is now in possesion of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after being purchased by Steven Spielberg in 1996 to prevent further commercial gain from it.

Gable's final appearance was opposite Marilyn Monroe in "The Misfits" a film which beside its well known cast made only $100,000 over its production costs on release. Two days after filming ended Gable suffered a heart attack, and lived a further 10 before dying.

Gables eight time leading lady, and close friend Joan Crawford sums him up as "he was a king wherever he went. He walked like one, he behaved like one, and he was the most masculine man that I have ever met in my life."
