Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson
John Joseph Nicholson - born 22 April 1937, in Neptune, New Jersey - occupation: living legend. A 12-time Academy Award nominee, 3-time Oscar-winner, Jack’s early career sputtered with more writing than acting, but he did get into useful cahoots with Roger Corman.

Then came Easy Rider and his first Oscar nomination in 1969, followed by another three nods for Five Easy Pieces, The Last Detail and Chinatown, before finally winning the statue in 1975 for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Oscar #2 follows in 1983 with Terms Of Endearment, and with films like Prizzi's Honor, Ironweed and The Witches Of Eastwick, Nicholson cemented his iconic status.

Somewhere between earning a then record-breaking $7m (increasing to a whopping $60m via percentage profit deal) as The Joker in 1989’s Batman, and getting yet another Oscar nomination for his shouty Colonel in A Few Good Men (1992), Jack began simply playing Jack. And has been doing so pretty much ever since.

Academy Award #3 arrived in 1997 for As Good As It Gets, and a nod for About Schmidt in 2002 means that Jack and Michael Caine are the only actors to be Oscar-nominated in five different decades.

Recent years have largely been spent sitting in the front row of the Oscar ceremony wearing dark glasses and grinning like Hollywood royalty. Plus airing his Jack-ness in the odd movie, including a superb swagger through Martin Scorsese's The Departed, chewing all the scenery he can see.

Wise words: "With my sunglasses on, I'm Jack Nicholson. Without them, I'm fat and seventy."
