Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey
Born 17 January 1962, in Ontario, Canada – rubber-faced comedian who rose to the top of the box office tree via a huge breakthrough year in 1994, which saw comic-book anarchy in The Mask, gross-out comedy in Dumb And Dumber, and slapstick buffoonery in Ace Ventura - Pet Detective.

An overnight success Carrey most definitely wasn’t, however. A born performer, he was doing stand-up at high school, and spent much of the 80s trying to get a mis-firing film career off the ground and taking miscellaneous comedy gigs.

A combination of the two put him in cahoots with the Wayans brothers and TV sketch show In Living Color for four years from 1990, after which the big time beckoned. Carrey followed up his 94 hat-trick with The Riddler in Batman Forever, was the first actor to hit a $20m pay-day for The Cable Guy, and drove on into more serious, actorly fare like The Truman Show and Man On The Moon.

He has sustained similar variety (and salary) into the 2000s: gross-out-ings (Me, Myself And Irene) and crowd-pleasers (Bruce Almighty), balanced by critically-rated drama (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind). And now a thriller – The Number 23.

Wise words: "I tend to stay up late, not because I'm partying but because it's the only time of day when I'm alone and I don't have to be on, performing."
