Christopher Lee

Christopher Lee
Christopher Lee was born on May 27th, 1922 in London, England. He was enlisted in the Royal Air Force during World War II, and desired a career in acting upon his return. He was initially discriminated against for his tall stature of 6 feet 5 inches (195.6cm), but his success despite this has made him one of the tallest leading actors of all time, along with Rock Hudson and Vince Vaughn. He made his film debut in Corridor of Mirrors (1948), playing the role of Charles. After Hammer Films Productions’ The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), in which he played The Creature, was well-received, he was cast in various other Hammer productions. He is quite famous for his villainous performances in Dracula (1958), the role he is most famous for, and The Mummy (1959), both of which he costarred with his good friend Peter Cushing. Lee played Dracula in numerous sequels as well, until he retired from Hammer Films Productions in the 1970s. He explained, “I stopped appearing as Dracula in 1972 because in my opinion the presentation of the character had deteriorated to such an extent, particularly bringing him into the contemporary day and age, that it really no longer had any meaning.”

He remained in the film business, however, and moved to Hollywood in the 1970s. His 1970s films included The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), The Three Musketeers (1973), and To the Devil, A Daughter (1976), though none of them were quite memorable. He then returned to England when his career began to fizzle.

He resurrected his career in the early 2000s, and was in prominent films including Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), as well as the two other films in the trilogy. In 2005 he played Dr. Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) with Johnny Depp. Lee is said to have performed in more films than anyone else of his generation.
