Gabriel Byrne
Gabriel James Byrne is an Irish actor and film producer, who has been nominated for an Emmy award. He is also a UNICEF ambassador to Ireland
Gabriel turned to acting later on in life, undertaking a number of activities before selecting this as a career. As a child, he spent five years in a seminary where he was training to be a priest. Deciding that this was not for him, he turned to other opportunities which reflected his love of language. He has studied the Irish Gaelic language at University College in Dublin, and has produced Irish-language drama works.
Initially, Gabriel turned to theatre acting with companies in Dublin. He eventually moved to London, however, where he appeared in productions by the Royal Court theatre and the Royal National theatre in London.
Gabriel made his first television appearances on Irish television, for the show 'The Riordians' and the associated show 'Bracken'.
Gabriel then moved to film, appearing as Lord Uther in 'Excalibur', which is a film about the King Arthur legend.
Gabriel has appeared in a variety of films and has had a range of roles. Gabriel's notable flexibility in acting includes going from playing a part as a Vatican priest in ' Stigmata' to playing Satan in the film ' End Of Days'. Other notable films include 'Leningrad', ' Assault On Precinct 13', and ' Played'.
Gabriel has received an Emmy nomination for his current television work 'In Treatment, which is produced by HBO. Other awards include the 'Volte' award for life-time acting acheivements, and the 'Irish Film and Television Awards' for his role in Jindabyne.
Gabriel's continued prominence in acting is confirmed by the fact that he has been called one of the 'hottest' celebrities over the age of fifty.
