Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage
Nicholas Kim Coppola - born 7 Jan 1964, in Long Beach, California - is the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, and became Nicolas Cage to avoid accusations of nepotism.

He's versatile and (more than) a little out there, and roles in the 80s and early 90s - which began with Fast Times At Ridgemont High and Coppola's Brat Pack ensemble Rumble Fish - were variously wild and woolly.

And then 1995 comes along with a Best Actor Oscar for the harrowing Leaving Las Vegas, and - bam! - he follows up with not one, not two, but three big-budget, big-box-office action movies: The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off, and by late '97, it's a whole different story.

Cage is now a $20m movie star but, to his credit (if not always his financial benefit) he sticks to manic variety.

And it's worth Knowing that the man who gave us Castor Troy is also the man who gave us Johnny Depp - they're old mates, and Nic once urged him to give acting a go...

Wise words: "To be a good actor you have to be something like a criminal, to be willing to break the rules to strive for something new."
