Gael Garcia Bernal

Gael Garcia Bernal
Gael Garcia Bernal, born 30 November 1978 in Mexico, is one of cinema's hottest talents and a rising star of recent years. Having graduated from Mexican televions, via London's Central School of Speech and Drama, he first captured attention in Amores Perros (2000), directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. His reputation as a promising young actor was cemented by starring in Y tu mamá también (2001) and El Crimen Del Padre Amaro (2002), the former receiving rave reviews.

Other notable films featuring Bernal include The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), in which he played a young, pre-revolutionary Che Guevara for the second time after 2002 mini-series Fidel; Pedro Almodovar's Bad Education (2004); James Marsh's The King (2005); Michel Gondry's The Science Of Sleep (2006); and Fernando Meirelles' Blindness (2008). His second collaboration with Alejandro González Iñárritu on Babel (2006) is probably the most widely-seen of Bernal's roles to date, though the film is arguably the most divisive in his catalogue, with critics and audiences either loving or hating it.

Refreshingly, and unique to many successful actors, Bernal has seemingly refused to succumb to the temptation of Hollywood, and has remained a prominent presence in the independent film industry. The majority of his roles have been in non-English language films, which is not to say that he is averse to other roles, merely that he appears to focus on the strength of his characters and the films themselves rather than seeking box-office popularity.

Clearly an intelligent and thoughtful actor, Bernal has made a perfect transition from television to the big screen. That he speaks Spanish and English fluently (his near-flawless American accent in The King is ample proof of the latter), and also Italian, French and Portuguese, is testament to his flexibility. It also means that, hopefully, he will continue to appear in a diverse range of films spanning the global film industry - benefitting himself and cinema-goers alike.
