Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman
Now Hollywood's highest paid actress (partly due to Julia Roberts' current motherly sabbatical), Nicole Mary Kidman was born 20 June 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii – and raised near Sydney, Australia.

Early telly and kids' film roles in the 80s (check out BMX Bandits) led, via acclaimed mini-series Bangkok Hilton, to open-sea scares in Dead Calm and red-hot fume-fest Days Of Thunder – the former bringing international profile; the latter, a movie star hubbie.

Two further films with Tom Cruise – Oirish melodrama Far And Away and Kubrick sex-a-thon Eyes Wide Shut – more or less bookended the 90s, during which Kidman's star rose steadily but slowly through murky thrills in Malice, black comedy To Die For, costume caper Batman Forever and George Clooney action pic The Peacemaker.

Then, as her 10-year marriage dissolved, Kidman's rise to the pinnacle of the female A-list gained serious momentum. A Golden Globe for the hugely popular Moulin Rouge was followed in swift order by an Oscar/BAFTA/Golden Globe triple for The Hours.

A very hit-and-miss record since hasn't stopped Kidman's wage packet from becoming the fattest in all the land. She's now married to Kiwi country-music star Keith Urban, recently did a Marilyn Monroe-turn in penguin animation Happy Feet, and has completed filming as Mrs Coutler in The Golden Compass – first adaptation in Philip Pullman's highly rated His Dark Materials trilogy.

Wise Words: "Even from a very early age I knew I didn't want to miss out on anything life had to offer just because it might be considered dangerous."
