Leslie Nielsen
For over 50 years Leslie Nielsen graced our screens as a cinema great. As a young actor Nielsen enjoyed a successful career in both television and film, and later made a name for himself starring in a string of feature-length parodies.
In 1956 Nielsen landed his first big-screen role in Fearful Decision, followed shortly afterwards by Forbidden Planet – a film which propelled Nielsen into the limelight. In the 70s he starred in the Oscar-winning The Poseidon Adventure, which was met favourably by critics. But it wasn’t until the 80s and a lead role in Airplane! that Neilson achieved iconic status. Throughout the late 80s and 90s Nielsen became synonymous with a spoof style of comedy – most famously The Naked Gun series.
However by the time the Millennium arrived, Nielsen’s career took a slight downturn. After the phenomenal success of The Naked Gun series, Nielsen moved into a quieter period in his career, starring in lesser known films and making guest appearances on television shows, such as Scrubs.
Nielsen married four times and had two daughters from his second marriage. On November 28, 2010, Nielsen died in his sleep of complications from pneumonia.
