Steve Carell
Born 16 Aug 1963, in Concord, Massachusetts - Steven John Carell’s steps on the comedy road began with Chicago’s stage troupe Second City in 1991 – right around the time he landed a small role in Curly Sue, with James Belushi.
Film fame was still more than a decade off, however, and Carell found work teaching improv comedy, as well as writing and performing in sketch comedy: the short-lived Dana Carvey Show in 1996, which led to Saturday Night Live, and then to a regular gig on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
In 2003, his supporting role in Bruce Almighty really got the ball rolling, and eye-catching turns in Anchorman and Bewitched led to Carell leading The 40 Year Old Virgin and the US refit of Ricky Gervais' smash-hit docu-com: The Office - An American Workplace - Series 1.
NBC stuck with it through a poor first season, and The Office US is now a huge ratings winner with some 50 episodes and counting. Carell starred in Oscar-contender Little Miss Sunshine, and will next be seen reprising his Bruce Almighty character in the sequel, Evan Almighty.
Wise words: "I think a character in a comedy should not know they're in a comedy."
