Johnny Depp
John Depp II - born 9 June 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky - is bold and beautiful, and - these days, at least - he makes films that make him happy.
After cropping up in A Nightmare on Elm Street and Platoon, things really took off in 1987 with 21 Jump Street. Four seasons of the US cop show made Depp a poster-boy sex symbol - a tag he hated and began dismantling immediately.
The double-whammy of Edward Scissorhands and Cry Baby established his fondness for the weird and wonderful, and the 12 years from 1990 only continued this trend.
Then came Captain Jack Sparrow. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has rightly made Depp a huge superstar, but he's still all about vivid variety.
An unfussy but totally committed actor, he has a peculiarly British sense of humour (which meant he once championed The Fast Show to a room of bewildered American mates), and currently lives in Paris with long-term belle Vanessa Paradis and their two children.
And he's played the role of Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street...
Wise words: "Sure, I find it touching, honestly, but awards are not as important to me as when I meet a 10-year-old kid who says: 'I love Captain Jack Sparrow' ... That's real magic for me."
