Ray Winstone
Raymond Andrew Winstone - born 19 Feb 1957, in Hackney, London - was a bit of a lad in drama school (ie he got kicked out), but cheekiness earned him an audition for controversial, borstal (TV) movie Scum in 1977, and that performance won him the raft of brutal, tough-guy roles that followed.
Messing around in Lincoln green with Robin Of Sherwood expanded the perceived Winstone range from 1983, but tough-guy telly largely remained his staple throughout the 80s and early 90s.
Nil By Mouth in 1997 showcased Ray's brutal intensity on the big screen, and though hard-men film roles would follow, his dramatic ability also shone through, and he was able to play against type, often with a comic edge, in movies like Martha Meet... and Fanny & Elvis.
Since Sexy Beast in 2000, the Winstone profile has been properly climbing: returning to TV as the king-kiddy in the acclaimed Henry VIII, saddling up with King Arthur, superb turns in The Proposition and The Departed, and beaver-banter in Narnia.
He'll be in Indy IV, and continues with the voice-work in digitally animated epic Beowulf and - hey! - our latest LOVEFiLM telly ad...
