Nigel Hawthorne

Well shown on the theatre circuit, particularly for his Shakespearean roles, Hawthorne was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as King George in The Madness Of King George (1995).

Hawthorne was best known to screen audiences for his ever-topical performance as Britain's top civil servant, Sir Humphrey Appleby, in the BBC's 1980s sit-com Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister. He was knighted himself in 1999.

Sir Nigel died in 2001.
