Nicol Williamson

Born on 14 September 1938, Nicol Williamson is a Scottish stage and film actor. He studied at Birmingham School of Speech and Drama and made his professional debut in 1960. In 1964 he won a Tony Award for his role in John Osborne's Inadmissible Evidence. The play subsequently transferred to Broadway and later film, where he again took the starring role. Other film roles have seen him portray Sherlock Holmes, Little John and The Wind In The Willows' Badger. His best remembered role will be as Merlin in John Boorman's 1981 film, Excaliber. After appearing in the 1997 film Spawn as Cogliostro, Williamson retired from acting to concentrate on music, poetry and writing.
