As a lad, he moved to Cork, Ireland with his mother and a few of his brothers which was not easy for him. However, casting agents looking for Irish boys to appear in a film, 'War of the Buttons' spotted him and invited him to audition. He didn't get the role, but the casting directors were impressed and encouraged him to go for more auditions and pursue acting.
Soonafter, he got his first film role in 'A Man of No Importance' in 1994 and in 1996 acted in 'Michael Collins' (although, he is not in it until the very very end.)

He subsequently went on to do a ton on TV and Films, most notably:
Starred in television CBS 4-hour mini-series Elvis (2005) as Elvis Presley alongside Randy Quaid (For which he won a Golden Globe)
A David Bowie-inspired glam rock film 'Velvet Goldmine' (1998)

Woody Allen's film 'Match Point' (2005)

Following the success, of 'Match Point', Rhys's acting career kicked into 1st gear. He received a Chopard Trophy at the Cannes Film Festival for it, then a year later in 2006, he appeared in 'Mission: Impossible III' along side Tom Cruise.
He is currently starring in the Showtime cable series The Tudors (2007) as the young Henry VIII. He was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Drama in 2007 for the role.
Subsequent film projects included:
August Rush (2007)
The Children of Huang Shi (2008),
Shelter, co-starring Julianne Moore
From Paris with Love (2010), co-starring John Travolta.
