Miriam Hopkins

Ellen Miriam Hopkins was born in Savannah, Georgia on October 18th 1902 and raised in Bainbridge. At the age of 20 she became a chorus girl in New York City before signing for Paramount in 1930. After a few low key performances she enjoyed her first great success in Trouble In Paradise (1932) She then embarked on the most productive stage of her career starring in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1931) Becky Sharp (1935) for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress, Barbary Coast (1935) and These Three (1936)
She turned down the role of Ellie Andrews in It Happened One Night in 1934, the role went to Claudette Colbert who went on to win an Academy Award. She had many public spats with her arch enemy, Bette Davis after an affair with Hopkins' husband, Anatole Litvak. They did however star in two movies together, The Old Maid (1939) and Old Acquaintance (1943) She did not work again until The Heiress (1949) followed by The Mating Season (1951)
Hopkins auditioned for Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind losing out to Vivian Leigh even though she was a native Georgian like the heroine herself.
She moved into TV from the late 1940's to the early 1960's and was honoured with 2 Hollywood Hall of Fame stars, one for movies and one for her TV work. Her final movie role was in The Chase (1966).
Hopkins was married and divorced 4 times, first to actor Brandon Peters, second to aviator Austin Parker, third to director Anatole Litvak and finally to war correspondant Raymond B Brock. In 1932 Hopkins adopted a son Michael Hopkins.
She died in New York from a heart attack 9 days before her 70th birthday.
