Ken Campbell

Ken Campbell (1941–2008) was a much-loved British actor-director-writer best known for his television roles in Fawlty Towers (as Roger), In Sickness and in Health (as neighbour Fred Johnson), Brookside (as Oscar Dean) in G.F. Newman's Law And Order (as corrupt lawyer Alex Gladwell), The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Blue Carbuncle (as servant James Ryder) and Marple: A Pocket Full of Rye (as butler Crump). He wrote and appeared in BBC 2's Unfair Exchanges and Channel 4's The Madness Museum. In film he appeared in A Fish Called Wanda, Saving Grace, Derek Jarman's The Tempest, Letter to Brezhnev and Creep, among others. He appeared as himself in 1981's Secret Policeman's Ball with Sylvester McCoy as the Ken Campbell Road Show and wrote and presented popular-science series Reality on the Rocks, Brainspotting and Six Experiments That Changed the World for Channel 4. He directed two of the longest plays in the world, Illuminatus and The Warp, and was acclaimed for his award-winning one-man shows, a number of which appeared at the National Theatre. He was Professor of Ventriloquism at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London, and worked with a troupe of talented actors in improvisational theatre, including directing a Pidgin version of Macbeth and touring with his company School of Night.
