Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder
Winona Laura Horowitz - born October 29, 1971 in Minnesota, adopted the name Ryder for her first screen appearance in "Lucas" in 1986. She came into her own in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" (1988) playing a disaffected teenager and further cemented this reputation in "Heathers" (1989).

Working with Burton again she found great acclaim with "Edward Scissorhands" (1990) and while filming this she got together with co-star Johnny Depp to whom she was engaged until 1993. Her next big success was working with Francis Ford Coppola in "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (1992).

Her portrayal of Mary Welland in "The Age of Innocence" (1993) earned her an Oscar nomination and that same year she helped to publicise the plight of the Klaas family whose 12 year old daughter Polly had been kidnapped. Sadly, Polly was found murdered and, in memoriam, Ryder brought an adaptation of Polly's favourite book "Little Women" to the screen in 1994, gaining a second Oscar nomination. 1994 also saw Ryder film the more contemporary "Reality Bites" and the beginning of her relationship with Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner. 1996 saw Ryder getting back into the corset for "The Crucible".

It was after her ill advised casting in "Alien Resurrection" (1997) where things took a turn for the worse. Despite a very credible performance, she failed to be Oscar nominated for her portrayal of Susanna Kaysen in "Girl Interrupted" (1999) and went on to appear in "Lost Souls" (2000) and "Autumn In New York" (2000) which were universally panned, the latter being nominated for a Razzie. At 30 it seemed that Winona had lost her way and when she was arrested for shoplifting and being in possession of unprescribed medication in the winter of 2001 it appeared that her professional failures had spilled into her private life with media speculation that she had a painkiller addiction. In November 2002 Winona was found guilty of theft and vandalism. She was fined and ordered to undertake community service.

Ryder kept a very low profile for four years after her conviction with both "Mr Deeds" (2002) and "S1m0ne" (2002) appearing before the guilty verdict. She did not return to the Screen until 2006 where she played the role of Donna Hawthorne in "A Scanner Darkly" to favourable reviews. However, subsequent films "The Ten" (2007) and "Sex and Death 101" (2007) both failed to impress the critics.

In 2008 she broke up with Blake Sennett, the lead guitarist from Rilo Kiley, and filming wrapped on "The Last Word". 2009 will see her take the role of Spock's mother in the new Star Trek movie, "Star Trek".

Wise Words: "I've learned that it's OK to be flawed, that life can be messy, that some days you glide and some days you fall, but most important, that there are no secret answers out there."
