Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood
Living legend is perhaps a slightly overused phrase in Hollywood, but when it comes to Clinton Eastwood Jr - born 31 May 1930 in San Francisco, California - it almost seems a little lacking.

As Rowdy Yates in cowboy TV-show Rawhide (his big break in 1959), and then the Man With No Name in Sergi Leone’s spaghetti western trilogy, Eastwood became an icon (and an anagram) of Old West action. And some producer said he’d never amount to much because of that squint.

Exchanging six-guns for a .44 Magnum cemented Eastwood’s star status in the 70s – three Dirty Harry movies underpinned a decade of useful variety: buddy capers with a young Jeff Bridges in Thunderbolt And Lightfoot and an orang-utan (of indeterminate age) in Every Which Way But Loose, plus double duties as director/lead in revisionist westerns High Plains Drifter, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and thriller Play Misty For Me.

That parallel career as director continued throughout the 80s with highlights like Pale Rider, Heartbreak Ridge and Bird, alongside the familiar combo of cop, cowboy and army roles. Academy Award recognition for his twin-hatted brilliance finally came in 1993 – although missing out on Best Actor, Eastwood’s anti-Western Unforgiven netted Best Picture and Best Director.

Working with a tight-knit community of actors, camera and production crew; Eastwood has produced a superb catalogue of films and has almost redefined the Western.

It was the same story with Million Dollar Baby 11 years later, Eastwood winning Best Picture and Best Director but missing out on Best Actor. And solid, compelling thrillers and drama have remained Clint’s stock-in-trade in between. At the grand old age of 76, he’s showing no signs of stopping, and Oscar-nominated yet again for Letters from Iwo Jima (2006).
