Philip Glenister

Philip Heywood Glenister, born 10 February 1963 in Harrow, London, whose inspired turn as a spectacularly Cro-Magnon 70's copper in the BBC sleeper hit 'Life on Mars' catapulted him from the ranks of jobbing character actors to household name - and created a bonafide pop culture icon, to boot. Following elder brother Robert into the acting profession, Glenister earned his spurs guesting on ITV teatime staples - 'Silent Witness', 'Heartbeat', 'Soldier Soldier' - before graduating to more upmarket fare, making life difficult for Ioan Gruffudd's dashing lieutenant in 'Hornblower' and dealing with trouble at the top as 'Clocking Off's factory boss.

Always workmanlike, sidelines in classy one-off dramas like 'State of Play' and a superb turn as lovelorn soldier Will Dobbin in the BBC's under-rated 1998 production of 'Vanity Fair' elevated his star a little further but, lacking a pretty face or RADA pedigree, he seemed consigned to second billing. Hollywood called briefly in the shape of a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in 'Kingdom Of Heaven' but thankfully (for us) he returned in time to deliver his tour de force as DCI Gene Hunt. He surprised many by immediately showing up in full period getup as Francesca Annis's gruff but kindly estate manager in 'Cranford', and, whilst reprising Gene for 'Ashes to Ashes', he continues to cast his net widely, and will next give us Texas's answer to Rupert Giles in ITV's upcoming 'Demons'.
