Kevin Smith
Born 2 Aug 1970, in Red Bank, New Jersey – writer/director/producer/actor, and self-confessed comic-book nerd and Star Wars fanatic, Kevin Smith's low-budget, sharp-scripted, character satires have struck a chord with their reflection of the so-called slacker generation.
Clerks, filmed on an absolute shoestring and picked up by an initially reluctant Miramax at the Sundance Film Festival, made Smith’s name in 1994, after which Mallrats, then Chasing Amy and the controversial Dogma cemented his reputation.
Jersey Girl – starring long-time regular Ben Affleck – was Smith’s largest budget and most mainstream offering to date, but disappointed his followers. After which he returned to where it all began with Clerks-.html"> Clerks 2.
Quite possibly the biggest fan of comic book guru Stan Lee in the world, Smith has regularly guested for Marvel and DC Comics since 1999, writing Daredevil, Green Arrow and Spider-Man stories.
And if that isn’t evidence enough of his comic-book fanaticism, his daughter, Harley Quinn Smith, is named after a character in the Batman animated series.
Wise words: "I just don't think somebody like me should be in charge of big-budget movies. I'm too interested in dialogue, and dialogue and big budgets just don't blend very well."
