Freddie Francis (1917-2007) is an acclaimed British director and cinematographer perhaps best known for his collaborations with Hammer, which include; Paranoiac (1963) Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (1968) and The Creeping Flesh (1973). Francis began working in the film industry as a camera operator, progressing to cinematographer and working on such classic British films as Room at the Top (d. Jack Clayton, 1959) and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (d. Karel Reisz, 1960), before directing his first film, Two and Two Make Six, in 1962. Francis then directed his first film for Hammer, Paranoiac, going on to make many other films with the studio and fellow horror-specialist production company Amicus. After this Francis returned to cinematography and was able to add to his long and illustrious career by working with the likes of Martin Scorsese (Cape Fear, 1991) and David Lynch (The Straight Story, 1999). Francis has won two Oscars for Cinematography for Glory (d. Edward Zwick, 1989) and Sons and Lovers (d. Jack Cardiff, 1960).
