Cheers is the bar run by recovering alcoholic and former Red Sox pitcher Sam Malone (Ted Danson). When Diane Chambers (Shelley Long), a teaching assistant, is dumped by her professor boyfriend, she takes a job waiting tables at the bar, thus beginning an on-again/off-again relationship with Sam. Ever present characters in the establishment include salty bar maid Carla (Rhea Perlman), and barflies Norm (George Wendt)--who has the bar's highest tab, and Cliff (John Ratzenberger)--a fact-quoting postman.
