Sad, brutal, bleak, with one of the best atmospheric shoot-outs going. Cooper is grizzled and jaded, Lee J Cobb eats the screen.

3:10 To Yuma

Haven't seen the remake, but this is massively underrated. Very similar story to High Noon, and sits alongside it in my opinion.

My Darling Clementine

Must-see. Fonda is perfect. Mature shows what he could have been doing in all those other terrible movies he ended up making. Just one of the GREAT westerns.

Hawks masters another genre. So warm, compassionate, characterful and with great final showdown.

Adapted from 19th Century French short story! Have to have seen this to know anything about Westerns. Wayne so young and charismatic.

The Man From Laramie

One of a great series of Westerns Anthony Mann made around the fifties, this time with Jimmy Stewart. Serious drama wrapped up in great sweeping desert vistas and glorious technicolour. Good to see the great Arthur Kennedy chewing the scenery.
