Swinging London had Blow Up, Grunge era Seattle gets Singles. Cameron Crow defined his generation when he still had the odd remnant of subtlety to his romantic touch. Filled with (then) big names like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and (playing Matt Dillon's backing band Citizen Dick) Pearl Jam, Singles could we'll be the pilot episode for Friends were it not for it's full on soundtrack and arty ambitions.

Basically a low budget Porky's played out as a feature length Ramones promo. And what's wrong with that? Far superior to Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park or Slade In Flame. Praise indeed :)

Meatloaf plays the titular 'Superhero' (yes he has special powers) escorting a young fan across Texas so she can pop her cherry with a member of Alice Cooper. How intrinsically rock is that? Also features acting cameos from all the members of Blondie

Alan Price took soundtrack to new levels by appearing in the film everytime one of his songs popped up. This trick has later been utilised in films such as There's Something About Mary and The Life Aquatic, but few movies shift about with such verve and invention as O Lucky Man. Often cited as a classic of it's cinematic era but rarely given props for the quality of the rock on offer. This bloke was in The Animals!!!

Ideally this spot would be shared by 200 Motels and The Grateful Dead
Movie. But Head pips them to the post for being directed by Jack
Nicholson. That's no excuse for the nonsense on show here but it will
help you take a perverse pride next time you see Anger Management

Too good to be amongst some of the trash on this list Rude Boy still feels exciting today. Compared to the bloated Great Rock And Roll Swindle or the rock dinosaur nonsense of The Song Remains The Same Rude Boy is one of those Rock Band's Own films that tells you something about the time and place it was made in/for. Like a Punk Rock Hard Day's Night.

Not many people will have heard of Fastway. 'Fast' Eddie Clarke and crew while away from Motorhead made some totally 80's sounding metal as Sammi Curr's backing band. Sammi was a PRMC nightmare who died then haunted the master tapes of his unreleased album. Through Gene Simmons DJ, Ozzy Osbournes chatshow appearances and some dodgy special effects he is reborn like a freddy kruger/Twisted Sister hybrid.
Oh the joys of playing records backwards. Simpler times.

Fictional Rock Bands needed a full on movie representation here. Josie And The Pussycats were unremarkable. Stillwater only have two songs and Steel Dragon were naff. So I give you Hedwig. A flim rock star so weird you'd buy their records, and they'd probably be huge.

...or Beatles Begins. This 'Origins' movie centeres on the fifth Beatle who pursued a career in art and a relationship with his German girlfriend istead of being 'toppermost of the poppermost'. Other great rock reconstruction movies include 'Stoned', 'The Doors', John Carpenter's 'Elvis' and the more recent Ray Charles/Johnny Cash movies. Beackbeat stand out because it's about someone who didn't make it. And it's all the sweeter for it.

There are reasons some rock movies are forgotten. Sgt Pepper is full of them. The Bee Gee's play the Beatles. The soundtrack is covers of the fab four by the big names of the day. The only masterstroke is casting a 'then' wasted Aerosmith as the Blue Meanies. Makes Tommy look like and Epic.
