Not a film I know, but a mini-series. Truly superb television, great action sequences, well acted, high production values, it just doesn't get any better!

Gritty, grim, incredibly tense and remorselessly realistic. you can almost smell the U-boat on the screen. Definitive when it comes to the U-boat crew's experience of the war. The book is also superb.

Let down by a weak ending, the first 20 minutes are the best WW2 combat sequence anywhere and re-wrote the book on how it should be done. Great performance by Tom Hanks.

The human side of the Nazi party's elite is revealed in the insanity of the final days of the Third Reich. Looks fantastic and Bruno Ganz as Hitler is definitive. Still, its difficult to feel sorry for them

The best eastern front war film ever made. Its grim and bloody and ultimately hopeless. Let down by a weak ending as they ran out of money, but Steiner is still a legend.

They just don't make films on this scale anymore, with a cast of thousands and a story equally ambitious. The 1st airborne's drop onto Arnhem is the film's best scene. Great Sunday afternoon watching.

Trapped and hopelessly out-gunned, conscripted Japanese soldiers are left to face the full force of the US's attack. This is a worthy effort at telling the story from the other side, and far better than the long-winded Flags of out Fathers.

More a bank-heist caper movie than a war film, but its a great fun romp as Clint Eastwood and a US recon platoon go AWOL to steal Nazi gold. The Tiger tanks still look good.

Top battle scenes in the ruins of Stalingrad, but again a weak and rather baffling ending.

An actual British war film about our experience of WW2! Dealing with the retreat to Dunkirk and the civilians involved in the rescue mission - it tells the story from two directions. This film cries out to be re-made with modern special effects, it would knock Atonement into a cocked hat, somebody please do it!
