Angel - Season One

Spin-off from Buffy. Starts strong, then flounders before improving again.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Season 1

It starts off pretty laughable but as the acting and the scripting improve throughout the series it becomes something rather special.

V - The Mini Series

OK - it looks pretty dated and some of the special effects may make you chuckle, but it's still really good.

Cambridge Spies

I do love a good spy story! This is based on the true events of four Cambridge undergraduates who are recruited by the KGB. Toby Stephens and Tom Hollander are fantastic as Burgess and Philby.

Weeds - Season 1

This really is American comedy at its finest. Mary-Louise Parker stars as suburban soccer-mom turned drug-peddler. The tension ratchets up in the 2nd season and there are great big belly-laughs to be had! I only wish the episodes were longer... That's US TV for you, I suppose.

House M.D. - First Season

One of our finest exports is Hugh Laurie. It's mind-boggling to watch Blackadder or Jeeves & Wooster alongside this. You've got to wonder whether many Americans realise that he's one of ours! He stars as the pithy misanthropic doctor who's the go-to-guy for conditions no-one else can explain.

Grey's Anatomy - Season 1

OK - so it's a soap - but I still love it. You'll spend a lot of time getting quite angry with this show's protogonist, Meredith Grey, who wallows in self-pity more than seems strictly necessary. It's hugely entertaining and marvelously addictive.

Wire, The - Season 1

This is a proper gritty American drama. Set in Baltimore amongst the housing projects and drug-lords' territories you get an equal look into the lives of the individuals on both sides of the law. You may occasionally require subtitles as the authentic gangland Baltimore patois can be fairly unintelligible at times.

West Wing, The - Complete Season 1

Oh, how much do I love the West Wing? So very very much! Martin Sheen stars as US President Jed Bartlett in this 7 season epic. Aaron Sorkin is in the driving seat script-wise for the first four seasons, and the fast paced dialogue is fairly ground-breaking in style. The final seasons have remarkable resonances with the recent US election (of Nov 2008). This is solid gold television!

Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip

This subsequent offering from Aaron Sorkin was much maligned by the critics for not being as good as West Wing - but I loved it. The roles played by Bradley Whitford and Matthew Perry as head writer and director of a live comedy sketch show are based heavily upon Sorkin's own character - megalomanic genius with addiction problems. Halfway through the show suffered a hiatus owing to poor ratings and then on its return becomes an allegory of itself. It was great - and it's such a shame it was axed after just one season.
