All Quiet On The Western Front

The 1979 'John Boy Walton' version not a patch on this original. Highlights the futility and horrors of the first world war. Not enough movies set during the first world war. With Hollywoods recent craze for remaking classics, would love to see this get the big money thrown at it.

Apocalypse Now Redux

Martin Sheen went mad during the making of this movie and you can see why, outstanding performance. And who can forget Robert Duvall's Colonel Bill Kilgores imortal lines 'I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end... '

Platoon

Oliver Stone directs what probably is the definative Vietnam war movie, emphasasing the futilty of the war, brilliant 60's soundtrack, fantasic performances from Charlie Sheen, Willem Defoe, Tom Berranger, a cameo from John C (Scrubs) McGinley and a very young Johnney Depp.

In PLATOON, Oliver Stone uses his experience as an infantryman in Vietnam to convey the immediacy of guerrilla warfare: the brutal heat of the jungle, the brushes with such wildlife as snakes and leeches, and, most powerfully, the presence of the unseen enemy. 9th Company

One of the lesser known war movies, shot from the Russians point of view during the war in Afganistan in the 80's, following a group of very young green conscipts as they try to survive the horrors of war, very realistic, one of the best war movies of recent years.

A Bridge Too Far

Richard Attenbourgh's huge historic telling of the failed attempt to capture several bridges to Germany in World War II in a campaign called Operation Market-Garden. Would be easier to list who isnt in this movie, but lets say Michael Caine, Edward Fox, Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery, Dirk Bogarde, Elliot Gould, Gene Hackman, Larry Olivier!! too many to list, absolute classic, un-missable.

Kelly's Heroes

Dont know why i have such a soft spot for this movie, maybe its Eastwoods ultra cool performance of Kelly, Telly Savalis' manic, shouting Big Joe, maybe Donald Sutherlands brilliant crazy laid back 'Why dont you knock it off with them negative waves' Oddball. maybe because it has one of the best theme tunes of any war film Mike Curb Congregation's 'Burnig Bridges' its just an all round great great movie,

Zulu

Outnumbered British soldiers do battle with Zulu warriors at Rorke's Drift. Stanley Baker, Jack Hawkins and a very young Michael Caine star in what is a classic British stiff upper lip war movie, maybe not strictly factually correct but still a wonderful movie and one what set Mr Caine on his way to mega stardom.
