Hero

Simply.... a philosophical martial art masterpiece. This beatiful film needs only to rely upon its strong and solid storyline, unlike many other films that rely heavily upon its fighting scenes rather than telling a worthy story.

The Last Samurai

Not usually a fan of these kind of films, meaning, westerner comes in weak and emerges strong to take the hero position, but in this film, while Cruise emerges a hero, his position is overshadowed by the realisation that it's the 'way' of the samurai that emerges as the true successor.

A Raisin In The Sun

If you've ever wondered how great an actor Sidney Poitier is, then this is the film to watch. It was after watching this film that it struck me just how masterful an actor Mr Poitier really is.

Do The Right Thing

Spike Lee (writer/director) may know his art well (film-making), but in this film he demonstrates that he knows his people/community better. Do the Right Thing is a classic example of Lee's ability to bring to the forefront, the aspirations, fears, hopes of a community's search to find itself.

Dreamgirls

For the quality of the music and songs itself, this film is great. Captures the era fantastically, and due to the fantastic songs you actually forget you are watching a musical.

Malcolm X

If you've read the book "an autobiography of Malcolm X" before viewing the film, then you will probably assume that a film could never recapture the essence that is so wonderfully portrayed in the book. But Spike manages to brings words on paper to visual-life perfectly. Even if you've never read the book, this film does the portrayal of Malcolm X accurately.
