Midnight Cowboy

A magnificent and poignant tale of love and friendship.

Twelve Angry Men

Pure drama and a wonderdul script, Fonda gives an imperious performance in this role.
  • Twelve Angry Men on DVD (1957)

    Director: Sidney Lumet
    Certificate: Certificate: U
In the definitive version of Reginald Rose's timeless script, an all-white jury decides the fate of a youth accused of murder. This tightly constructed searing exposé of prejudice in the American legal system stars Henry Fonda and a pantheon of great character actors.

The Pianist

A desperate tale of survival against insurmountable odds. I love it because it's not about heroism. That's why (for me at least) it impresses more than Schindlers List and other films of heroic proportions.
  • The Pianist on DVD (2002)
Starring: Adrien Brody,  Thomas Kretschmann,  Frank Finlay
    Director: Roman Polanski

City Of God

I've seldom seen a film so full of energy as Cidade de Deus.

Downfall

Bruno Ganz gives an eerily good performance as Hitler in his final days. It's dark, moody and very well depicted.

Bombon El Perro

A down on his luck dreamer, a big ugly dog and Patagonia, what more can you want? My number one feel good movie.

Leaving Las Vegas

A tragic tale of desperate love, marvelous acting from both Cage and Shue and a memorable soundtrack.
  • Leaving Las Vegas on DVD (1995)
Starring: Nicolas Cage,  Elisabeth Shue,  Julian Sands
    Director: Mike Figgis
    Certificate: Certificate: 18
With LEAVING LAS VEGAS, director Mike Figgis spun critical gold out of what would appear to be a maudlin and hackneyed premise--a down-and-out drunk meets a hooker with a heart of gold. The reason for the film's success lies partly in its refusal to moralize, but mostly it is the strong ..read more »

Leon

Jean Reno is convincing as a naiive hitman who takes a supposedly streetsmart kid to his heart, the film manages not to be overly sentimental. Gary Oldman is a wonderful maniac.

    Director: Luc Besson

Gladiator

I never tire of watching this
  • Gladiator on DVD (2000)
Starring: Russell Crowe,  Joaquin Phoenix,  Oliver Reed
    Director: Ridley Scott
    Certificate: Certificate: 15
Ridley Scott (BLADE RUNNER, ALIEN) transports Hollywood to second-century Rome in this rousing historical epic that proudly harkens back to such films as BEN-HUR and SPARTACUS. Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the empire. When an aging ..read more »
