Lolita

A beautiful re-telling of the classic novel. Slightly controversial for it's time, due to it's portrayal of a man's infatuation with an under-age girl. The film uses cutting edge, non-linear narrative techniques, and adept cinematography. Brilliantly acted, great script. 10/10

Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's controversial LOLITA is a wicked satire of sexual obsession, sadomasochism, and fetishism. Doctor Strangelove

Kubrick's funniest film is an utter joy to watch. Peter Sellers is incredible in has trio of roles, and again all the acting is first class. Dark themes are explored, and the cold war is ridiculed. Full of immortal images such as the air pilot riding the bomb. Great script, great cinematography and sound, overall world-class. 10/10

2001 - A Space Odyssey

A voyage of unimaginable beauty. This is not only Kubrick's greatest, but in my opinion THE greatest film of all time. I don't need to tell you anyway, because (unless you inhabit a dark cave on Mars) you will have already seen it. 10/10

A Clockwork Orange

Another masterpiece. Cinematography, sound and editing have rarely been fused so perfectly together. Oh and the narrative is a wee bit controversial too. 10/10

Barry Lyndon

Not quite as strong as what has come before it, but still a true masterpiece. Mainly held back by a poor performance from the leading man, but the landscapes are more beautiful than ever. The narrative builds up suspensefully, and offers no predictable hollywood equilibrium in its conclusion. Almost perfect. 9/10

The Shining

Vastly under-rated. This is by far the best horror film ever made, and in my opinion Jack Nicholson gives one of the greatest acting performances in cinematic history. 10/10

Eyes Wide Shut

Kubrick tragically died before this film was finished, and perhaps that goes a long way to explaining why it seems so fractured. The film is far too long-winded and confused. Lacks original cinematography, and any real sense of direction. 5/10
