It took 8 years to make, directed by the writer/artist of all 6 graphic novels of the same name, this really is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. It may be a little hard to digest for newcomers, the rich, layered plot, dealing with evolution, the after effects of war, gang crime etc, demands a second or third viewing, but even if only watched once the film is a guaranteed experience that no one can ever forget, and is a large, detailed and intelligent plot told through the eyes of teenagers, and is therefore super cool and even young children find it near impossible to turn off. Rich colours, some of the greatest animation of all time, every frame a hand painted master work. The film is simply magnificent.
(This dvd has irritating subtitles - hearing impaired only - so be warned - also only contains the new dub, which is also bad.)

Nowadays television is becoming more popular than cinema, it's less of a teenage gimmick, the plots are thick and layered, there's more time to get to know characters etc - and as a result, films are getting longer, substance however is being replaced by special effects and films often leave you feeling cold and are easily forgettable. Stand by Me, made in the 80's, set in the 50's, manages to be a film aimed at adults, yet it's about children, and therefore children love it too. However, despite it not being a long film, it hits all the right bases to make you feel as though you've grown with the characters, and by the end, it's as though you spent years in the little town of Castle Rock and lost a piece of your childhood there. A beautifully effortless film.

An ambitious masterpiece, pulled off with precision and such attention to detail that it bridges the gap between commercial art and just plain art. The result is that some people hate it - it's too different, too dark, too offensive. If that's the case for you, I feel sorry for you because you missed out on an incredible experience that changes with every viewing. Absolutely bloody brilliant - a thrill ride from start to finish. I couldn't take my eyes off it.

Realising that this was made in 1948 also makes me realise how little cinema has progressed, and in more ways than one, actually regressed. A fantastic script, controversial, edgy, suspenseful (Obviously) a Hitchcock masterpiece and my personal favourite.

One of the best Hollywood films ever made, and yet not Hollywood at all. It's Hollywood in that it's a film that provides entertainment and little more, but entertainment like this comes rarely in any type of medium. Sergio Leone brings ingenuity and style and takes a Hollywood form and turns it into art. The best Western of all time and one of the greatest films of all time too.

Dave, my mind is going - and by this point, you may feel that your mind is going too. A film that changes the form of what exactly a 'film' is supposed to be. Too artsy for some, but that's precisely why its worth it's acclaim. The first viewing I was expecting something I didn't get, and I didn't know what to make of it. Second viewing the magic worked - the tone and pace makes you feel like you're in space. Less a film than a work of Art, but it opens the mind to wonderful thoughts and the world is a richer place because of it.

A lovely little film with a terrific script. Deals with the subject of new found love and isn't remotely cheesy. A little slice of life, for what it is, it's quite perfect.

Wonderful - the directors cut is probably the better of the two. Think 'Slumdog Millionaire' but at the pace of a good Western and with music by Ennio Morricone.

The Japanese aren't very good at making live action films, yet they're notoriously the greatest producers of animation on the planet. Sometimes animation takes you one step out of reality, but this film is based in the real world, a war film set after the atomic bomb. You'll forget it's animated, and yet that's its charm and its beauty. Pulls at the heart strings in all the right ways, and has depth that Disney films avoid in order to compensate for more mainstream audiences.
