Swingers

It might not seem it, but comedy about relationships doesn't always mean shallow rom-com / chick-flick. Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn light the screen up with some of the best dialogue ever committed to film. Vegas, baby, Vegas.

La Haine

Hard-hitting MTV-generation film-making by Mathieu Kassovitz, in an at-turns hilarious, heart-warming and harrowing tale of 24 hours in the lives of three guys on a Parisian council estate.

Rushmore

Quirky indie comedy at its absolute best, courtesy of Wes Anderson. If you like the new, surly and downtrodden version of Bill Murray, then this is not to be missed.

From Russia With Love

Enough jumping on the Daniel Craig bandwagon - Casino Royale was superb but Quantum of Solace was a rushjob letdown. Connery was the best Bond and this will always be the best Bond film. Taking its cue from Hitchcock and The Third Man, a perfect mix of spy intrigue, steamy exoticism, and 60s class.

The Apartment

Billy Wilder at his ascerbic, satirical best in probably the best romantic comedy you've never seen. No schmalz here, just a bitter-sweet swipe at get-ahead capitalism and love in the workplace. Some Like It Hot for the real world.

Withnail And I

Student / cult classic, easily one of the most quotable films of all time. Only gets better with repeat viewings.

Do The Right Thing

Spike Lee's tour de force: 24 hours of rising tension in Bed-Sty, New York. Still his best work to date.

The Royal Tenenbaums

More Wes Anderson gold, this time with an incredible all-star cast. Sharply written, meticulously designed.

Good Will Hunting

"Do you like apples?" A witty, life-affirming film about a boy genius from the wrong side of the tracks. Sounds terrible, I know, but watch it. Even Ben Affleck's good in it.

The 25th Hour

Spike Lee, Ed Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rosario Dawson... Another great 'day/night in the life of' drama. The post-9/11 polemic might be layered on a bit thick, and the ending is a bit contrived, but this still packs one hell of a punch. Watch out for the best night club you'll never get into.
