Shadows

Anything by Cassavetes is set to blow the mind, this his debut is a as good an introduction as any. Oozing hipness and allowing us a glimpse into a fascinating moment of time within a fascinating family. Sheer genius.

Gummo

Surreal yet somehow utterly believable narrative-less masterwork by Harmony Korinne, a true iconoclast. This isn't for everyone but neither is this list - which this film most definitely belongs on!

Funny Ha Ha

Wonderfully tender portrayal of quarter life crisis anxieties. These are transferable worries that all can relate to. Despite (or perhaps because of) the inarticulate 20-something langauge this speaks volumes about the peaks and troughs. Just amazing.

La Haine

Supposedly an excellent portrayal of life in the French projects - fantastic cinematography and script with welcome surreal flourishes, including the finest anecdote ever told on screen involving urinating by a train. Check at once.

Faces

Cassavetes masterwork, human relationships relentlessly examined under the most microscopic of cameras.

Cassavetes follows the complicated lives of a group of middle class people living in LA and contains some startlingly raw performances from actors Lynn Carlin and John Marley as married couple Maria and Richard who both commit adultery to escape the misery of their loveless marriage. Kids

Idiots that were trying to ban and censor this accurate portrayal of youth culture clearly missed the morality involved. The effect this had on my personal upbringing is remarkable. Brilliantly written (Harmony Korinne again) and directed with non judgement by Larry Clark. Check Ken Park if you can as a companion.
  • Kids (1995)
Starring: Leo Fitzpatrick,  Justin Pierce,  Chloe Sevigny
    Director: Larry Clark
    Certificate: Certificate: 18
A group of street-tough Manhattan teens fight, party, take drugs, have sex, and scoff at the consequences in this unflinching account of one day in their lives. Larry Clark's controversial, bleak portrait of societal decay originally garnered an NC-17 rating, which the filmmakers surrendered, ..read more »

Cannibal Holocaust

Thankfully not a common reality but included here for its masterful documentary style that never lets up. A deeply disturbing and unflinching work of horrofying genius. Not for the weak of stomach but worth the trip out there if you can bear to witness such sheer cruelty.

Man Bites Dog

A glimpse into the shocking mind of a likeable fellow who happens to be a serial killer and rapist. Dark as gallows humour can go it's a fantastic idea wonderfully executed. Imaginative film making that is in turn hilarious and sickening.

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu

Deadpan as you like, not a laugh out loud comedy by any stretch (as some have called it!?!) but a long journey through a strained health care system full of the egos of devilish types and the patience of the angelic underdog. Alarmingly disarming.

A Winter's Tale

Wonderfully romantic tale with a mighty chance of a meeting but one that doesn't feel forced. With a great central performance of romantic confliction from the lead. My favourite of Rohmer's seasons movies, though they are all worth seeing!
