The Big Lebowski

The first appearance on the list for the Coen Brothers is their sublime comedy, The Big Lebowski. There is literally a million reasons why you need to see this film, incredible cast, genius plot, hilarious dialogue and it's all shot in the usual glorious Coen fashion. Possibly the best comedy ever made. "Obviously you are not a golfer"

The Usual Suspects

I would confidently say this is my favourite film ever! This beautiful little piece of film noir contains some of the most amazing performances ever committed to screen, enthralls from the first minute and has the greatest plot twist in film history. A masterpiece.

Slackers

It aint all high brow! This film is a welcome departure from the usual teen movie fodder in that it's genuinely funny (ok, it's pretty damn stupid but it works!). Worth wasting an hour and a half on.
  • Slackers on DVD (2002)
Starring: Jason Schwartzman,  Devon Sawa,  Jason Segel
    Director: Dewey Nicks
    Certificate: Certificate: 15
SLACKERS is a knee-slappng addition to the teen gross-out comedy genre. Directed by former fashion photographer Dewey Nicks and written by AMERICAN PIE 2 scribe David H. Steinberg, this raunchy and irreverent farce takes many of its cues from the original coed comedy ANIMAL HOUSE, and also clearly ..read more »

Clerks

Kevin Smith's monochromatic debut manages to cram so much chaotic circumstance and (frankly) brilliant dialogue into a day in an american convenience store that it stays with you. You could watch this film over and over and over and it would never get tired. The cherry on the cake is the fact that Clerks 2 was recently released, and it's actually rather good! "I'm not even supposed to be here today"

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Second appearance for the Coen brothers and it's an equally enjoyable film but in a very different way. It still keeps the leftfield humour but through basing the film around Homer's 'The Oddessy' adds a real air of wonder that makes this film a joy to watch. Oh and the music is just fantastic.

Brotherhood Of The Wolf

Christophe Gans re-wrote the dramatic horror genre with this awesome film. It's a joy to watch and considering how small his budget was, a real achievement. Also worth checking out is his visually arresting film version of Silent Hill.
  • Brotherhood Of The Wolf on DVD (2001)
Starring: Samuel Le Bihan,  Emilie Dequenne,  Jeremie Renier
    Director: Christophe Gans
    Certificate: Certificate: 15
BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF is a wild mix of martial arts, horror, and French period drama. Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan), a charming naturalist and libertine, arrives in Gevaudan with his companion, Mani (Mark Dacascos), a taciturn Mohawk Iroquois Indian with amazing fighting skills. Happy Gilmore

Needs no introduction. Funny enough to make you wet yourself. "It's all in the hips"

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

A real treat for those with a leftfield sense of humour, Bill Murray's Campari drinking, trainer wearing sea explorer is just plain odd, but in a very good way. Not only that, Seu George brings his glorious covers of Bowie hits to the party.

High Fidelity

Even though they insisted on setting the film version of the hilarious Nick Hornby novel in America, it translates to the screen really well, mainly thanks to the great performances, in particular John Cusak and the always amazing Jack Black. "The night that Laura's daddy died, shanana..."
  • High Fidelity on DVD (2000)
Starring: John Cusack,  Jack Black,  Lisa Bonet
    Director: Stephen Frears
    Certificate: Certificate: 15
Transplanted from England to the not-so-mean streets of Chicago, the screen adaptation of Nick Hornby's cult-classic novel High Fidelity emerges unscathed from its Americanisation, idiosyncrasies intact, thanks to John Cusack's inimitable charm and a nimble, nifty screenplay (co-written by Cusack). ..read more »

Night Watch

The highest grossing Russian film of all time is just incredible. Put your disbelief aside for a couple of hours and you won't be dissappointed.
