Pieces Of April

Katie Holmes before TomKat. A family drama that feels real, shot digitally and featuring a stand-out turn by Patricia Clarkson as Holme's ailing mum. An unjustly-neglected gem.

Thumbsucker

Dreamlike US drama from Mike Mills - a graduate of music videos who is more akin to David Fincher or Spike Jonze than Brett Ratner or Michael Bay. Lou Pucci is the titular character, a regularly out of sorts suburban teenager grappling with an all-too-relateable family in various stages of dysfunction, medical "professionals" eager to medicate at the earliest opportunity and a school life which is steadily creeping towards disaster. Mills isn't - on the evidence of this film - much of a fan of pacy storytelling, but what he lacks in pulp plotting and narrative drive he more than makes up for in gorgeous cinematography - Mills' eye for an image and appreciation for the hallucinatory beauty of American suburbia jump off the screen - and appreciation of actors. Tilda Swinton is fantastic as Pucci's mother, and there's sterling support from Vince Vaughn, Vincent D'Onofrio and Keanu Reeves - the world's most Zen dentist.

American Cousins

Sweet, funny, occasionally profane and kind of an unexpected treat for "Sopranos" fans who always wondered about how their boys would fare if they fetched up unexpectedly in Glasgow. Boasting sterling acting, cinematography that makes Scotland look utterly glorious and a fish and chip cooking sequence to make you yearn for cod and chips twice. All this and the goddess-like Shirley Henderson, too. How can you refuse?

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

A surprisingly faithful but distinctive debut from promo visionaries Hammer and Tongs, with a rare, non-annoying performance from Martin Freeman. Great spectacle and plenty of "Wow!" moments commingle beautifully with Douglas Adams' wonderfully humane wit and insight.

Sky Blue

Korean anime - now there's a thing. I had wanted to see this film since seeing a huge poster for it in a Parisian cinema in 2004 and wasn't disappointed with the film when I saw it. Your usual SF tropes - environmental decay, domed cities, bad-ass loners wielding nifty cyberpunk tech - are present and correct, but the film's tone is distinctive enough to erase any fears that you're watching A.N. Other animated flick. Particularly fond of the low-life supporting character who is reminiscent of a more homicidal Moe Sizzlak from "The Simpsons"...

Spaced

Pegg, Stevenson, Wright - your hallmark of quality. Surreal adventures in the geekverse, witty dispatches from the cultural hinterlands, that bloke from Shaun of the Dead and some of his mates faffing about a bit - call it what you want, but make sure you see it...

What's Eating Gilbert Grape

For those of you who might like to see Johnny Depp act and not just camp it up, this is a joy to behold. A great adaptation of an underrated novel, this also features a fantastic Leonardo DiCaprio turn, some tellling home truths about the way that we treat people who don't live up to our preconcieved notions of beauty and quite gorgeous cinematography.

Gilmore Girls - Season 1

You've probably never seen it unless you check out the Hallmark or Nickleodeon channels on Sky during their infrequent broadcasts of this gem of an US comedy drama. Proud single mum and her bookworm daughter deal with life, the universe and prove the adage that you can't choose your family but you can choose your friends. Imagine a blend of "Northern Exposure", "Frasier", "Dawson's Creek" and the coolest soundtrack this side of a Wes Anderson/Cameron Crowe flick. Just make sure that you can keep up with the rapid fire dialogue and you'll be fine - these gals can TALK....
