A selection of superb films from the 1920's. They have appeared in many 'best films' lists, and for me, are particularly funny, moving or exciting. Each film listed is a 'satisfying watch'.
Stirring DW Griffith melodrama. Innocent Anna (Lillian Gish) is seduced into a sham marriage by a smooth-talking scoundrel (Lowell Sherman). Her trials include the celebrated rescue from an ice-floe as it drifts toward a roaring waterfall. A classic slice of 1920's melodrama. My favourite film of 1920.

"A comedy with a smile--and perhaps a tear". Charlie Chaplin's tramp adopts an abandoned baby. More than just a 'kick in the pants' comedy - some real feeling between the little tramp and the child. My favourite film of 1921.
Vampire Count Orlok expresses interest in a new residence and real estate agent Hutter's wife. Silent classic (unofficially) based on the story "Dracula." Scary photography makes this a riveting classic horror story. My favourite film of 1922.
Safety Last ! (1923) Harold Lloyd's finest film. He is forced to climb a tall building for the sake of his job and his girlfriend. Iconic silent stunts and comedy. The finest of its type, and included on the first disk of this collection. My favourite film of 1923.

Because of his age, an elderly doorman at a hotel finds himself ignominiously demoted to washroom attendant. 1925 (1st of 2 films): Based on historical events the film tells the story of a riot at the battleship Potemkin. What started as a protest strike when the crew was given rotten meat for dinner ended in a riot, murder and mutiny. Culural references to this film continue to appear through cinema history.

(2nd of 2 films): Charlie is in the Klondike searching for gold. The film maintains a careful balance of masterful slapstick, romantic tenderness, and wry social satire. Also contains the celebrated "dancing dinner rolls" rountine. My favourite film of 1925.
Considered to be the last truly classic comedy of the silent film era. Set against the background of the railroads and our hero's great love - a locomotive known as 'The General'. Buster Keaton's deadpan delivery and timing is outstanding. My favourite film of 1926.
