Fantasia

1940 (1st of 5 films): An anthology of animated fantasies set to lengthy classical music pieces. Disney boldly experimented with different forms of animation, sometimes jettisoning any sort of narrative altogether. The result is a sometimes mesmerizing, sometimes hilarious, sometimes frightening, but always beautiful moviegoing experience. My favourite film of 1940.

Walt Disney took a big chance with this ambitious anthology of animated fantasies. First, he set them to lengthy classical music pieces, and then he boldly experimented with different forms of animation, sometimes jettisoning any sort of narrative altogether. Charlie Chaplin - The Great Dictator

1940 (4th of 5 films): Chaplin pokes fun at the Nazi Reich as few others were doing in Hollywood at that time. Both funny and disturbing at the same time.

The Letter

    Certificate: Certificate: U
William Wyler directs an unscupulously nasty Bette Davis who is at her compulsive best in Somerset Maugham's celebrated melodrama. Citizen Kane

1941 (1st of 4 films): A 'high-water' mark of cinematography, fascinating story-line and acting panache. Orson Welles is superb and the journey to find the identify of 'Rosebud' is a compelling one. My favourite film of 1941.

Dumbo

1941 (2nd of 4 films): Dumbo is so cute. The ulimate lovable baby elephant. Not an easy storyline. Shunned for being different, he has his mother taken from him and is pressed into dangerous employment. A heartbreaking story with an exhilarating conclusion.
  • Dumbo on DVD (1941)
Starring: Verna Felton,  Herman Bing,  Stirling Holloway
    Director: Ben Sharpsteen
    Certificate: Certificate: U
Deceptively simple, beautiful, moving, and hilarious, DUMBO is often overlooked when considering Disney's greatest films because perhaps of its lack of extravagance, its brief running time, and its simple story. Baby elephant Jumbo Jr. is delivered by the stork to his elephant mom with much fanfare ..read more »
