City Of God

A very violent but inspirational story about the street gangs of Rio de Janeiro, seen through the eyes of a young boy who struggles to make a better life for himself as a photographer. Breathtaking.

Glengarry Glen Ross

A film about a bunch of struggling real estate salesmen in a small office who are told that they need to improve their sales figures to keep their jobs. On the surface. this doesn't seem an interesting plot. Who cares about a cold-call salesman? But these characters are played by amazing actors. Look at the cast: Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, Jonathan Pryce. They all give good performances, but Jack Lemmon and Al Pacino in particular are outstanding. The film is about the 'American Dream' and can be compared to Arthur Miller's play 'Death of a Salesman'. But 'Death of a Salesman' is far bleaker and depressing. I much prefer 'Glengarry Glen Ross', which I've watched many times and find strangely uplifting.

Eyes Wide Shut

Kubrick's most beautiful film. Stanley Kubrick started out as a photographer and it shows. The visuals, particularly in the use of colours, are stunning. Don't worry about the plot. The film is really a long dream. It's deliberately enigmatic. Everyone who watches this film comes away with their own idea of what it is about. I've seen it several times and experienced something new each time.

The Motorcycle Diaries

Che Guevara as a young idealistic doctor, riding around South Americal on a clapped-out motorbike in the 1950's with an older friend. With wonderful location shooting in Argentina, Chile and Peru. This is a very enjoyable film.

The Constant Gardener

By the same director as the 'City of God' (the brilliant Fernando Meirelle) this is a strange but intriguing thriller based on the John Le Carre novel. Ralph Fiennes gives a solid performance in the lead role. But the real star of the film is the amazing African scenery in which it is set. Africa has never looked more beautiful.

Donnie Darko - Feature Disc

Weird but wonderful. The lead character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a young lad from a well-to-do family who has a vivid imagination and apparent mental problems (he is being treated by a psychiatrist, but so are a lot of rich American kids!). He keeps meeting a giant rabbit that fortells the future and apparently learns to travel back in time. Then it gets confusing...

Three Colours Trilogy

Watch all 3 films, preferably in order. 'Three Colours Blue', the first in the trilogy, is a moving story about a young woman who is grieving over the loss of her family from a car accident. A beautiful and elegant film with lovely music. 'Three Colours White' and Three Colours Red' are also fantastic.

Pan's Labyrinth

A fairytale, but definitely not for children. This a very dark and violent film, set in rural Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The lead character is a young girl who has desperately unhappy life, so she retreats into a fantasy world of fairies, fauns, giant toads and other fantastical creatures. Sublime.

The Devil's Backbone

An earlier film by the director of Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro) and also set during the Spanish Civil War. This is a supernatural tale of young boy who is put in a strange orphanage which is haunted by a ghost. But it's not so much a ghost story, but more of a battle between good and evil.

Being There

Peter Sellers gives an incredible performance as the simple minded gardener. Very funny but sad at the same time. Enchanting.
