West Wing, The - Complete Season 1

President Josiah 'Jed' Bartlet (Martin Sheen) - he's smart, he's compassionate, he's funny, he's a people-person (as long as he doesn't become Uncle Fluffy) - seriously, give MaSheen the keys to the real Oval Office and have done with it...

24 - Season 2

President David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) - calm and statemanlike even in the face of the most outrageous crisis. Apparently requires little sleep, and has a loyal terrier always out in the field to get stuff done...

The Contender

President Jackson Evans (Jeff Bridges) - with gravelly voice and imposing presence, he can balance the pressures of a sex scandal erupting around a close colleague while tutoring the White House chef on how to perfect his particular choice of sandwich. Plays a mean piano, too.

Air Force One

President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) - the Action Pres: you can try to intimidate this guy, you can even hijack his plane, but he's perfectly happy to roll up his sleeves and pretty much single-handedly wrest it back from dastardly terrorist types...

Deep Impact

President Tom Beck (Morgan Freeman) - calm and candid, which you probably have to be when there's several million tons of asteroid about to slam the planet into nuclear winter and kill most of the population. Also sounds like God. Which is really good for press conferences.
  • Deep Impact on DVD (1998)
Starring: Robert Duvall,  Tea Leoni,  Vanessa Redgrave
    Director: Mimi Leder
    Certificate: Certificate: 12

Independence Day

President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) - Another Action Pres, this one's got a fighter plane, not a jumbo, and is eager to join Will Smith in taking to the skies to whup ET's ass (not his donkey - it's American for 'bottom')

The American President

President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) - employs charm and charisma to devastating effect, particularly when targeted at the crucial female vote. He's even got future Pres MaSheen as his Chief-of-Staff.

Primary Colors

Governor Jack Stanton (John Travolta) - silver-fox would-be President, who's even lighter on his feet than Shepherd. Apparently, JT's characterisation was loosely based on a former real-life incumbent whose career took a bit of a blow while in Office (ho ho). Who knew, eh...?

Mars Attacks

President James Dale (Jack Nicholson) - he is coping with a Martian invasion, admittedly (though perhaps not as well as President Whitmore), but it's all manic grins, pointy eyebrows and borderline panic. Tricky Dicky, anyone...?
  • Mars Attacks on DVD (1996)
Starring: Jack Nicholson,  Glenn Close,  Annette Bening
    Director: Tim Burton
    Certificate: Certificate: 12

Dave

President Bill Mitchell / Dave Kovic (Kevin Kline) - Mitchell's not a very nice man and Dave, well, Dave's not really sure what's going on, bumbles through official duties without genuine credentials and relies on those around him to just get through the day. Nothing like real-life, then..
  • Dave on DVD (1993)
Starring: Kevin Kline,  Sigourney Weaver,  Frank Langella
    Director: Ivan Reitman
    Certificate: Certificate: 15
A presidential look-alike finds himself in the oval office "filling in" for the president who has fallen ill. Lacking the political savvy of the real president, "Dave" proceeds to govern the country with a refreshingly straight-forward approach. Academy Award Nominations: Best (Original) Screenplay.
