Seven Samurai

One of my favourite films of all time and yes, its ALL THAT! If you hate subtitles, then this nearly three hour film is not for you. This masterpiece in film making may be hard going at times if you're not accustomed with Japanese culture, but give it ago and you will not be disappointed. The climatic battle in the rain is often imitated but never equalled . Excellent character study, direction, story and cinematography.

Hana-Bi

My favourite Kitano film. An unconventional detective film, that at its heart is a romantic film, but brilliant. At times beautiful and often lyrical, others violent and cold. And thats the point. Not a bad effort then after completly paralysing his entire left side in a motorbike accident.

Zatoichi

Kitano's first big money studio film. Maybe not as intellectual as his other films, but damn can he make good entertainment films. I also think this is where Kevin Smith got his dance idea for Clerks II.

Kikujiro

Time for something different. No violence, which may seem strange to people who only know Kitano for his violent films. He actually started his life as a comedian. This shows his tender comedic side (we'll just forget about GETTING ANY).

Brother

His first time in America and not really well recieved. Though i feel it's not well known. Violence, violence, death and more violence. This is one for introducing people to Kitano, featuring many of his trademarks. For the more action orientated viewer. " I understand f***ing Jap a**hole"

Sonatine

Kitano's Gangster film, and what a film indeed. Can be an acquired taste, the story focuses on gangsters in hiding and how they pass time, not their violence. But there is violence, oh yes, it's sudden and shocking. Typical Kitano then.

Violent Cop

Kitano's directorial debut, that he kinda made by accident. This is violence Dirty Harry style, there's no bullet ballet here, just straight forward violence. The ending is just beautiful. Bloody, very bloody, but beautiful nonetheless.

Gohatto

Kitano only acts in this one and it surprised me actually. A lot of swordplay and a fairly decent story.
  • Gohatto on DVD (2000)
Starring: Ryuhei Matsuda,  Shinji Takeda,  Tadanobu Asano
    Director: Nagisa Oshima

Widely regarded as the greatest living Japanese director as well as one of the film world's foremost hierophants of transgression, Nagisa Oshima returns from a long hiatus with a film worthy of his reputation.
