Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

This film has it all. Awesome photography, breathtaking fight scenes and the most beautifully crafted tragic love story. I sit in tears at the end every time I watch it.

Dogma

I love all the View Askew films but this one really resonated with me for some reason. Having a catholic upbringing made me a sucker for biblical mythology. Thank God I'm now an atheist.
  • Dogma on DVD (1999)
Starring: Ben Affleck,  Matt Damon,  Linda Fiorentino
    Director: Kevin Smith

Imaginative theology and a bigger-than-usual budget make Kevin Smith's (CHASING AMY, CLERKS) fourth film a kind of post-Catholic fantasy that only a comic-book enthusiast of his caliber could dream up. It concerns banished angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) who, after a few ..read more »

Twelve Angry Men

I saw this film quite recently and was blown away. What an intelligent and riveting plot. This sort of film just wouldn't get made anymore. And so thoroughly modern in its themes.

Starring: Henry Fonda,  Lee J. Cobb,  Ed Begley
    Director: Sidney Lumet

In the definitive version of Reginald Rose's timeless script, an all-white jury decides the fate of a youth accused of murder. This tightly constructed searing exposé of prejudice in the American legal system stars Henry Fonda and a pantheon of great character actors.

The Private Life Of Plants

Hard to pick which of David Attenborough's series to include. I think that this one showed the most difficult subject matter in the most interesting way. As a life-long fan of the natural world, I have to recommend all of David's work, but if you haven't seen any - start with this one.

Team America - World Police

Truly the most shocking puppet show you could ever imagine. With so many irreverent moments it isn't for the easily offended but a masterpiece of political satire.

Chasing Amy

I know, another View Askew, but a fantastic story that makes more sense to me than the usual predictable happy ending nonsense.
  • Chasing Amy on DVD (1997)
Starring: Ben Affleck,  Joey Lauren Adams,  Jason Lee
    Director: Kevin Smith
    Certificate: Certificate: 18
When handsome young comic book creator Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) meets cute young comic book creator Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), romance seems preordained. Schindler's List

Just a very important film that manages to capture the worst and best of humanity.

The Constant Gardener

A lovely slow twist that manipulates the emotions beautifully.

Monty Python And The Holy Grail

Just the funniest film ever made. Full stop.

Alien

This film will never date. As good as any modern sci-fi, if not miles better.
  • Alien on DVD (1979)
Starring: Sigourney Weaver,  John Hurt,  Tom Skerritt
    Director: Ridley Scott
    Certificate: Certificate: 18
Director Ridley Scott's breakthough film, an immensely successful blend of horror and science fiction, is a classic in both genres and spawned a host of sequels and imitators. Starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley, ALIEN focuses on the crew of the space cargo ship Nostromo, ..read more »
