Star Trek

Director JJ Abrams has brought a much needed breath of fresh air to the Star Trek franchise! This is an exciting thrill-a-minute rollercoaster ride that definately follows the light-hearted tongue-in-cheek style of the original 60's tv series! Although it skips over the 'academy years' a little too quickly, the actors, special effects, production design and story are all top notch - I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Star Trek 6 : The Undiscovered Country

Directed by Nicholas Meyer this is a great send off for Kirk and co. with a great storyline and some amazing sequences, such as the zero-gravity assassination and the awesome final battle. Christopher Plummer is brilliant as General Chang.

Star Trek 2 - The Wrath Of Khan

The other film by Nicholas Meyer (he really should have been allowed to do more Trek movies!) and the one that is always considered as the best one. Again some really memorable moments and some great characterisation. Very dark and Khan is a truly menacing character.

Star Trek 3 - The Search For Spock

I've never really agreed with the 'curse of the odd numbered Star trek movies' as ST3 is one of my favourites - the stealing of the enterprise is a fantastic sequence, a definite highlight of the entire series, especially accompanied by James Horner's rousing music score!

Star Trek 8 - First Contact

This is the Next Gen's best movie, lots of action, excitement and great characterisation. With a brand new USS Enterprise they take on their most dangerous enemy, the Borg and partake in a little time travel too (which is always popular!) The only gripe I have is that it feels too much like an extended episode at times.

Star Trek 9 - Insurrection

Again another odd numbered Trek movie that is actually pretty good. A more light-hearted affair than First Contact with some fun character moments and I love the rebellious nature of Picard in this one, acting more like Kirk! A good solid storyline and plenty of action!

Star Trek 1 - The Motion Picture

Many people find the first Trek movie very slow and boring, but the Director's Cut improves the pace and the structure of the story greatly. I've always loved Douglas Trumbull's special effects work in this one, he was a master of light and along with Blade Runner and Close Encounters this is his finest work!

Star Trek 7 : Generations

This was a nice idea of getting both Captains together and once they meet up it works really well. An awesome Enterprise crash sequence and some great comic relief from Data are highlights and it has quite a strong emotional thread running through the entire film right up until Kirk's death.
  • Star Trek 7 : Generations on DVD (1995)

    Director: David Carson

The first feature film starring the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" finds Captain Picard and crew battling a sinister scientist whose plot is a century old. Picard's only hope lies in forging an alliance with a legendary Star Fleet captain from the past.

Star Trek 4 : The Voyage Home

Although considered by most as one of the best Trek movies, I've never really seen the appeal of it - sure it has some great comedy but it is too much of a spoof for my liking, but it does have a very good story and special effects. The remote controlled model whales are impressive and very realistic!

Star Trek 10: Nemesis

A real shame that Nemesis turned out the way it did. This should have been the send off for Picard and co. that ST6 was for Kirk and co. A wasted opportunity but only due to the studio interfering and editing it - let's hope there is a Director's Cut! Disappointing, but it was nice to see a film about the Romulans and the final battle sequence is awesome.
