Hard Boiled

This is the greatest action movie ever!! I saw it on the big screen in 1992. It was unlike anything I had seen before. All out non-stop action with amazing stunts, two handed gun-play and Mexican stand-offs. The scene in the Hospital with Chow Yun-Fat holding a baby while taking out several bad guys is stunning. This is John Woo's best film.

A Better Tomorrow

The one that started it all! The original Heroic Bloodshed classic. This is where Woo invented a new genre and began his work with Chow Yun-Fat.
  • A Better Tomorrow on DVD (1986)
Starring: Chow Yun Fat,  Ti Lung,  Leslie Cheung

John Woo's forays into Hollywood cinema have revealed just how childish a lot of his material can feel when it is delivered without the clouding medium of subtitles. A Better Tomorrow II

A huge influence on Reservoir Dogs. The good guys all wear natty black suits, white shirts, thin black ties and sunglasses. The ending is one of the greatest shootouts ever filmed. This is the film Alabama is watching in True Romance.

Violent Cop

The first Takeshi "Beat" Kitano film I ever saw. Again, I had never seen anything like it. A film with bursts of violence. A great performance by Takeshi.

Boiling Point

A good film from Takeshi. More violence.

Sonatine

Takeshi's masterpiece. An outstanding, funny, violent film with superb acting. This is one of the greatest gangster films ever. It takes the genre to new places.

Hana-Bi

A more contemplative film from Takeshi but the violence is still there. Only Sonatine is better.
